Over the last 30 years, Americans have gotten a pretty good handle on their fat intake.  In fact, the intake of fat declined as a percentage of total calories consumed by Americans from 40% to 30% from the 1980s until today.  But if we've conquered fat so well, why is it that our obesity rate has nearly tripled since 1980?

The answer: carbohydrates.  Specifically simple carbohydrates, with the main culprit being sugar. Our intake of carbohydrates as a total percentage of calories eaten has gone from 40% to 55% over the last 30 years.  I will talk more about the dangers surrounding sugar and carbs in a later blog post, but for now I want to highlight a food that's been proven to stop the digestion of carbohydrates naturally: white kidney beans.

The Little White Bean

White kidney bean extract is a natural, non stimulant, that has been used to delay the digestion and absorption of carbs by blocking an enzyme, alpha amylase, associated with carbohydrate digestion in the small intestine. Also, this magic little bean lowers the glycemic index of these foods, which affects the level of insulin resistance that occurs when you eat them.   Like foods that are high in fiber, white kidney beans slow carb digestion allowing you to feel fuller longer.

Evidence

In a study published in the "International Journal of Medical Sciences" in 2007, researchers looked at the effects of taking 455 milligrams of an extract of white kidney bean, or Phaseolus vulgaris, on 60 slightly overweight subjects versus taking a placebo (sugar pill). The subjects also consumed a diet, rich in carbohydrates. After 30 days, subjects taking the extract experienced significantly greater reductions in fat, body weight, body mass index and waist, hip and thigh measurements. They were also able to maintain lean muscle mass, an active tissue that burns fat while you are at rest.

Conclusion

All supplements one takes should be taken in conjunction with a healthy diet and an active lifestyle to maximize benefit to one's health.  With that being said, White Kidney Bean Extract can help you achieve your goals in weight loss by blocking the digestion of carbohydrates, precluding them from being turned into fat for storage.
